Hosts, Don and Leonie Hatton have been involved in community conservation for 40 years. Laanecoorie was acquired and named in 1984. A forum of ecologists endorsed the Biota Haven concept in 1998 and Nillumbik's Mayor welcomed it in 2000 as an ecologically sustainable enterprise encouraging local (walking track) ecotourism.
